How to Heat Agarwood Chips: Methods Compared

Heating agarwood chips correctly is essential to experiencing their full aromatic potential. Too hot, and you'll burn the precious resin. Too cool, and the fragrance won't release.

Method 1: Electric Burner (Recommended)

Electric incense heaters allow precise temperature control. Start at 120°C (250°F) and gradually increase to 180°C (350°F). This slow, controlled heating reveals the full spectrum of notes — from the light top notes that emerge first to the deep base notes that linger.

Method 2: Charcoal

Traditional method using bamboo charcoal tablets. Light the charcoal, let it ash over completely (10-15 minutes), then place a mica plate on top. Put the agarwood chip on the mica plate — never directly on charcoal. This indirect heating method protects the wood from burning.

Method 3: Subitism Burner

A modern favorite among connoisseurs. The subitism burner uses a heated wire element for instant, adjustable heat. Excellent for quick sessions and comparing different woods side by side.
